Night had washed over the island as Amber settled into the passenger’s seat of Brooke’s car. She had apologized profusely for the sand she’d tracked into her pristine vehicle, but the other woman wouldn’t hear of it.
It was an odd contrast, as Amber remembered how obsessive Lena was with her own vehicle. One thing about power lesbians she thought. They certainly love their cars.
As she settled into a comfortable silence, Amber replayed the evening in her mind. Something she had never admitted out loud was that one of the reasons she loved photography was because it relaxed her. It allowed her solitude with her thoughts and brought her back to that all-important present moment. She stole a glance at Brooke in the driver’s seat, confident, poised and so casually sexy, as passing streetlights splashed over her sun-streaked blonde locks and highlighted the dimples on either side of her mouth.
That would be a picture she thought told herself before forcing her eyes back to the road ahead. Amber held back a wistful sigh as she wondered about that near-kiss on the towel. I didn’t imagine that, right? Brooke’s walls had been so quick to go back up that Amber thought it may have been wishful thinking. But I’ve been kissed by so many unsure women before. And I’m always the one who ends up hurt in the end because I tell myself that I can make them love me back, even though they never will.
“I never realized there was so much to photography,” Brooke spoke, her voice jarring Amber from her thoughts. Her hand dangled casually over the steering wheel as she glanced at her with a quick smile. “I think I have a newfound appreciation for the art.”
“Really?” Amber asked dubiously.
“Of course,” Brooke replied, her eyes on the road. “I took an elective photography class in high school, but I wish it had been more hands-on. I mean, it’s hard to get students engaged when you just talk at them and click through slides, you know? Let them get involved instead. Show them how to take apart and put a camera back together, let them play with the settings, teach them tricks in Photoshop. I think it would have been much more interesting if the class had been structured that way.”
Amber’s head snapped up as the wheels began turning in her brain. She blinked as the seeds of an idea began to take root. “That’s it!” She exclaimed. “Oh my God, Brooke, that’s it!”
Brooke glanced at her from her peripheral. “Sorry, I’m lost.”
Amber twisted in her seat and faced Brooke eagerly. “The expo! At the Chamber of Commerce,” she tried to explain. Her brain seemed to be cranking out thoughts faster than her mouth could keep up. “They’re trying to rebrand it from being a formal affair to a family-friendly event that kids will be interested in.” Amber paused and lightly smacked her palm against her forehead. “We’ve been racking our brains trying to figure out how to remodel the whole event on such short notice.
